After the initial idea and/or sketch is developed, it’s time to start work on the digital model. The 3d designer will make a digital render of your jewelry by using CAD (Computer Aided Design) software. The CAD, creates a mock-up of the final product, ensuring every aspect of the original design is transferred to the metal. This means that your exact specifications and requirements will be honored, and the final result will be an item that meets your needs and goals.Depending on the complexity of the project and how busy the studio or artist is, this can take anywhere from a day to a week.

The master mould will be created by rubber after the design confirmed. Rubber is required to make wax “copies” of the master model of the jewelry piece. The rubber mould is placed on the commercial wax injector machine. Molten wax is pressure injected into the mould cavity to create wax models for casting. This step can be done manually.

The process of soldering the wax pieces on a wax stem is called “insetting wax tree” Depending on the application multiple wax patterns are created so that they can all be cast at once. In other applications, multiple different wax patterns may be created and then assembled into one complex pattern. In the first case the multiple patterns are attached to a wax sprue, with the result known as a pattern cluster, or tree; as many as several hundred patterns may be assembled into a tree.

The jewelry manufacturer will infuse gypsum slurry into wax tree pattern and put the mold into oven until the gypsum hardens.

The following step, the jewelry goes through the casting process. The wax is melted away and is replaced with your metal of choice in molten form, usually brass, stainless steel, gold, silver, or platinum. The metal will dry into the shape on your jewelry. This technique is called “lost wax” casting.

After the metal dry out, the pieces are cut from the tree and checked in quality control to make sure each one has the correct shape and appearance. Although casting can make the jewelry into fine metal, the jeweler needs to make some adjustments and make sure the piece can set gemstones, diamond or other stone perfectly.
